Real estate is foreseeing a rise in sustainable living in the UAE.

Since the UAE began its mission to improve the environment and achieve sustainability, real estate developers have become more involved in the sustainability movement. Eco-friendly practices and environmental awareness now play a significant role in ensuring that new buildings obey sustainability measures. This includes the use of green materials and systems that are energy-efficient. Particularly, the new green Dubai developments are saving up to 20-30 percent of energy compared to traditional buildings.

Some of the most notable areas with projects that integrate sustainability and green energy sources are Al Furjan (one-bedroom price starting from AED 950,000) and Jumeirah Village(one-bedroom price starting from AED 1 million) in Dubai and Masdar City (one-bedroom price starting from AED 780,000) in Abu Dhabi. With an increasing demand for modern designs and high-quality finishing with sustainability in mind, new constructions saw an increased use of enchanting natural lighting and ventilation.

The UAE is set to achieve a 56 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 levels and also aims for 40 percent energy efficiency in the construction sector. The UAE’s progress in the decarbonization agenda, more often than not partnered with the private sector, is pulling it towards the ‘Climate Aware’ phase which is a phase that offers a wide range of opportunities as the country focuses on strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation with a target of reaching net zero by the year 2050.

According to Madhav Dhar, the chief operating officer and co-founder of ZāZEN Properties, the future developments will be environmentally friendly as all new projects will focus on energy-efficient buildings, efficient design, and sustainable construction methods.

Expanding on the UAE’s leadership’s decision to extend the Year of Sustainability to the year 2024, adding residential projects that maximize the natural light, thicker concrete slabs for better insulation, intelligent systems, energy-saving appliances, and energy from the sun in the form of solar panels Dhar added.
